Cheers to another great year of partnership! Construction spending in November 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau said Wednesday, was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of almost $2.1 trillion, 0.4% higher than the revised October 2023 estimate of approximately $2 trillion.
Year over year, this spending level is 11.3% higher than what the Census Bureau reported in November 2022. The private residential sector ended November with a spending increase of 1.1% to $896.8 billion when compared to October, the bureau said, and private nonresidential spending rose by just 0.2% to $698.2 billion in the same period. Between October 2023 and November 2023, public construction spending decreased by 0.7% to $455.2 billion, although spending for highway construction increased by 0.1% to $135.8 billion. Overall, public nonresidential spending was down 0.6% from October but increased by 16.3% year over year. The decade-long redevelopment will bring a sports arena and entertainment district to the Nevada resort. Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada, announced the largest private capital investment in the city’s history. The funds will add a sports arena, entertainment district and likely more hotel rooms to the 140-acre property.
Over the next decade, the existing Grand Sierra Resort and Casino will receive a $1 billion investment, including a new 10,000-seat sports arena, a golf facility and 300 waterfront residential units. Dallas and Atlanta were among the top U.S. markets with the largest hotel construction pipelines at the end of this year’s second quarter, according to Lodging Econometrics’ Q2 2023 U.S. Construction Pipeline Trend Report. Dallas’ pipeline reached 184 projects, or 21,501 rooms, at the end of Q2, while Atlanta’s pipeline totaled 141 projects, or 17,993 rooms. Other markets leading the U.S. hotel construction pipeline at the end of the second quarter were Phoenix with 119 projects, or 16,107 rooms; Nashville with 116 projects, or 15,346 rooms; and Los Angeles with 112 projects, or 17,797 rooms. Development and investment activity in these markets gained momentum in the second quarter, as major hotel players followed changing leisure and business traveler demand trends.
